In addition to regular medical care and well-child checks, staying on top of dental care is essential for a healthy lifestyle. Studies show that low-income and minority children face barriers to receiving dental care and suffer from higher rates of oral health problems. To ensure that our patients have access to dental services, Every Child Pediatrics offers onsite preventive care from a dental hygienist and we are excited to announce that our program is growing.
Dental services, which include cleanings, x-rays, fluoride varnish treatments and oral hygiene education, are provided in our Thornton and Aurora offices and through partners at our Aurora School-Based Health Centers. The dental program in our Aurora office launched in 2016 with the support of the Delta Dental of Colorado Foundation. Earlier this month, we began offering dental services in our Denver office. We also are looking to expand dental care to our Lakewood office.
Our integrated dental program grew out of earlier initiatives dating back over 15 years ago when we provided dental services in mobile vans provided by the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Colorado. The dental care program has grown year over year. In 2018, we provided 2,369 dental hygiene visits, a 35% increase over 2017. A significant number of our dental patients have Medicaid or are uninsured. Some children received dental services for the first time ever with us. In addition to the cleanings and preventive care, our dental hygienists work closely with our medical providers to support broader issues, such as diet and infant feeding practices that impact oral health. The medical-dental integration model has been a big success for our families.
